Chapter 224: Miney, Atlas and Millie

Previous Chapter Next Chapter

Author's notes: I really like this one. It's a bit short, but it does show a pretty good message and it introduces Millie and Miney pretty well. And also, from this story onwards, it will be after Alfred's downfall.

Miney, Atlas and Millie

(Crovens Gate, 1990)

Sweetie Belle: So Duke, who came after that?

Duke: Well, it was 2 more french engines. One was called Miney, and she came as a replacement for Alfred after his downfall, and the other was Millie. She, like Atlas, Alfred and Miney were built at Decauville. But, she had well tanks, not pannier tanks. And this meant she couldn't work with her sisters at the lead mines.

Pipsqueak: What did they do?

Duke: Well, Pipsqueak, here's what happened.

(Flashback, 1922.)

Narrator: Atlas, the little mine engine, had hard work shunting at the mines since the scrapping of Alfred. She was rushed off her wheels. Tim helped now and then, but was often busy transporting the lead down the tramway. The Manager, realising that Atlas was being rushed of her wheels, seized the opportunity to buy two more engines from the same works in France that Atlas came from.

Atlas: Oh my thank goodness. It'll be nice to have some company.

Tim: But what if they don't like me? What if they're mean to me like poor Clayton… I could never live with myself.

Atlas: Calm down Tim. They haven't even arrived yet. Just settle down

Narrator: And so Atlas and Tim went to work, wondering what the new engines would be like. The new engines arrived next day. The two engines looked a bit different. One was similar to Atlas and the other was completely different. She had 4 wheels, a cab, and no pannier tanks on each side of her boiler…..

Mr. Special announcement guy: We interrupt this Segment of Twilight Sparkle's Adventures of the Railway Series for this 4th wall breaking special message from Pinkie Pie, Miss Narrator and Mr. Narrator.

(Cue Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Concerto No. 21 – Andante) (Pinkie Pie, Miss Narrator and Mr Narrator sitting in comfortable chairs all with fancy drinking glasses filled with Pinkie Pie's fruit punch near a fire place in a beautiful decorated den dressed in elegant suits.)

Miss Narrator: Hullo there reader's and good evening. I'm am Miss Narrator

Mr. Narrator: And I am. Mr. Narrator we are the narrators of MLP/TTTE crossovers.

Miss Narrator: Although you never hear us at all, Miss Narrator and I both share the duty and job of narrating the stories.

Pinkie Pie: And I'm pinkie pie! (Gulps her punch down)

Miss Narrator: Yes and this is our best friend and 4th wall breaker pinkie pie. Oh Mortimer.

Butler: Yes Miss Narrator ma'm.

Miss Narrator: Could we get another glass of punch for miss Pinkie Pie.

Butler: Yes of course Miss Narrator. (Pours Pinkie a glass of punch)

Pinkie Pie: Thank you Mortimer…

Mortimer: Tis a pleasure miss Pinkie pie.

Pinkie Pie: Ahem. Now then, as most of you know already, most of the mine engines that worked on the Mid Sodor Railway all came from the country of France.

Mr Narrator: And although these mine engines eventually learn to speak English, sometimes it can often be difficult for some readers to understand what they are saying. Well unless you can speak and understand French of course.

Pinkie Pie: That is why for the benefit of those who cannot translate French, I have installed a translation box to help the readers translate what the mine engines are saying when they first arrive and to teach the readers French.

Mr. Narrator/Miss Narrator/Pinkie Pie: So with that said, you may now enjoy the rest of the crossover.

(Back to the story)

Atlas: Bonjour là. Mon nom est Atlas. Quels sont vos noms? (Translated) Hullo there. My name is Atlas. What are your names?

Millie: Bonjour Atlas. Mon nom est Millie. (Translated) Hello Atlas. My name is Millie.

Miney: Well…. Je n'ai pas vraiment de nom, mais vous pouvez m'appeler Miney. C'est un plaisir de vous rencontrer, Atlas. (Translated) Well... I do not really have a name, but you can call me Miney. It is a pleasure to meet you, Atlas.

Narrator: Soon, Atlas introduced Miney and Millie to Duke, Proteus, Falcon, Tim and Freddie.

Duke: Hullo there you two. My name is Duke.

Proteus: Name's proteus.

Falcon: I'm Falcon.

Tim: Um…m-my name is Tim.

Freddie: And I'm Frederick, but you can call me Freddie.

Miney: Hullo there. It's nice to meet all of you.

Millie: We're honoured to meet you all.

Narrator: Atlas and the other engines were very surprised.

Atlas: Wait a minute, you know how to speak English?

Millie: Indeed we do.,

Duke: But how? I thought…

Miney: We actually learned it from a British Sudrian Pilot who was on leave for a fortnight and he helped the mechanics to build us.

Falcon: Really? Who was his name?

Millie: I Believe his name was uh… James something… uh….

Miney: His name was James Angus Holden I believe

Narrator: The engines and Miss Ravens were very surprised but non so much as Mr. Holden.

Mr. Holden: WHAT?! You mean James Holden helped to build you whilst he was on leave in France?

Miney: That is correct, Mr. Holden. You know him.

Mr. Holden: That… That was my father. Golly, who would have thought that even during his career in the Royal Flying Corps career in the Sudrian detachment that he'd still be helping out with railways. Talk about déjà vu.

Millie: I know what you mean.

Miss Ravens: Now that's amazing.

Narrator: Just then, the manager arrived.

Manager: Good morning Atlas, Millie, and uh…

Miney: Oh just call me Miney.

Manager: Alright then, Miney it shall be. Now then, I shall be assigning you two for your work. Miney, you are to work with Tim and Atlas on the Casy-N-Hawin tramway and lead mines

Miney: Yes sir thank you Sir.

Millie: Excuse me sir, but what about me? Shall I work with them?

Narrator: The manager shook his head.

Manager: I'm sorry Millie, but I'm afraid that Casy-N-Hawin tramway only allows engines with sideplates and cow catchers or Pannier tank engines. But I do have job for you though. I can allow you to work at the coal mine near Ffarquhar Road station, as well as work the mainline.

Millie: Yes Sir. I'll do my best.

Narrator: Millie was glad that she was able to work both at the coal mine and the mainline, but she couldn't help but feel sad that she wouldn't be working with her Sisters. The next day, the 3 French engines set to work at once at the mines. Miney went work at Casy-N-Hawin lead mines with Atlas shunting trucks to and from the mines ready for Tim to take along the tramway. Millie had to help the other engines and shunt at the coal mine. Millie enjoyed her journeys along the mainline because it gave her a chance to stretch her wheels properly plus she found it quite dull working at the mines all by herself. But she was still sorry that she couldn't work with her sisters.

(Pulling a train of trucks)

Millie: I do wish I could help Miney and Atlas out at the lead mines.

Narrator: Miss Ravens understood.

Miss Ravens: I understand but you haven't got pannier tanks nor sideplates nor a cowcatcher.

Narrator: Millie sighed sadly.

Millie: I suppose so.

Narrator: One evening, after the engines came home, Millie backed sadly into her berth. Miney and Atlas were worried.

Miney: What's wrong Millie?

Atlas: You look sad.

Millie: (Sad sigh) Oh, I just wish I could be with you, my sisters.

Miney: You really do wish you could work with us?

Millie: I do.

Miney: Perhaps we could speak to the manager about this .

Millie: Thank you girls.

Atlas: Always glad to help a sister in need.

Narrator: Days passed and Millie still hadn't heard back from the Manager but sadden she was she decided to just carry on. Summer soon came and the line became busy again the engines and there crew had more trains, both goods and passengers than the railway had ever had. This not only effected the mainline but also the shunting mines and granite quarries got the brunt of the extra work. Miney and Atlas did alright at the lead mines but poor Millie was left struggling. She had to haul more trucks than ever before and some trains were so heavy that she had to divide the trains in to 4trucks each. She tried very hard but eventually the goods traffic began to get badly delayed.

Millie: (Panting) it's ever so tough it's ever so tough….

Miss Ravens: It's alright Millie. Just keep it up. You're good we'll make it somehow.

Narrator: The manager noticed this and knew he had to do something before Millie damaged herself. So one day, Miney and Atlas were shunting trucks for Tim, Mr. Holden was also there at the lead mines when the manager came up.

Manager: Atlas, Miney, I am pleased with your work. Would you two like to take turns at working with Millie at the coal mines every once a week?

Narrator: Miney and Atlas were delighted. At last they would get to be with their sister.

Miney/Atlas: Oh sir! Yes sir. Thank you sir.

Manager: Very well then. That's settled then. Atlas, since you were here first, you shall go first.

Atlas : Yes Sir thank you sir.

Mr. Holden: Right then Atlas let's go.

Narrator: Mr. Holden drove her over to the coal mine.

Tim: Oh dear. What if I can't get the shipment there on time? I couldn't bare it if I was late. What If I wear myself out? I'm doomed… Doomed I tell you….

Miney: Oh be quiet Tim!

Narrator: Poor Millie wasn't happy at all as she had to work extra hard than she ever worked before

Millie: (Sadly) Oh dear. I'll never be the same engine again. My wheel's will be quiet worn out.

Miss Ravens: Just keep going. We'll make it. I promise…

Narrator: Suddenly, they heard a whistle and there was Atlas standing right next to them

Millie: Atlas?! I thought you were busy at the lead mines.

Atlas: The manager says that I'm to help you out me and Miney both are. Manager says that me and Miney can take turns at helping you out here at the coal mine on weekly basis. What do you know about that?

Narrator: Millie was delighted.

Millie: Oh how wonderful. Now I can work with you both on certain days. Oh bless the manager's soul.

Narrator: Millie felt happier than she had been in weeks. Together, Atlas, Millie, Mr. Holden and Miss Ravens worked hard together collect trucks full of coal for the other engines. And when her turn came, Miney came to help out as well. She liked it as well cause she often found it annoying to work with Tim's pessimistic complaining sometimes. This system worked well and by the end of the summer they had gotten there work right back on track.

Manager: Well done Millie, Miney and Atlas.

Narrator: He turned to the two pannier mine engines.

Manager: Atlas, Miney would you two like to take turns working with Millie on a complete daily basis.

Miney/Atlas: Oh yes please!

Millie: Oh merci sir it'll be lovely not work by myself.

Narrator: And so it was arranged. Millie still works at the coal mines and on the mainline. When working at the coal mine Atlas and Miney are always there to help them out. All three work happily together and all 3 French engines were happy together for many years to come.
