Rainbow Dash stood stock still as the trumpets blew with her five friends, waiting for what would be the moment of truth; her mother would step out and, unless a miracle happened in the next minute, see her. She shook in her hooves, worry and fear blending together in her mind as she thought of the possibilities.
Was she still mad.
Did she miss Rainbow Dash at all.
Would she let her stay.
"Isn't this exciting y'all?" asked Applejack, stretching out her neck to see over the ponies in front of them. "I mean we're 'bout to see Princess Celestia and Princess Rainbow Dash for the first time. "
"I know, this is so exciting, I mean no one outside of Canterlot has ever seen Princess Rainbow Dash! I wonder what she's like, does she like to party? Oh, I wonder if she'd like to try one of my Chile Cherry Changas?" squealed Pinkie Pie.
"Well, darlings, I don't know about you but I cannot wait for this to end. The festival has been good for business and I hear that after the sun is raised both Princesses are going to go around town, I might be able to sell some dresses to the Royals," sighed Rarity. "Can you imagine a Princess wearing one of my dresses? This might be the break I have been looking for!"
"Say, Twilight, didn't you work in the palace?" Applejack asked.
"I did." Twilight said, not liking where the conversation was going. She glanced over to Rainbow who was lost in her own world. She caught Fluttershy's eye. The pink mare was staring concernedly at her friend.
"Then you must know what the princess was like!" Pinkie squealed.
"I do, actually, I was her advisor."
"Well, tell us!" They demanded in harmony.
"Is she uppity like some of the other bluebloods?"
"Does she like to party?"
"How about dresses? What is her style?"
"Um... I couldn't do that to you, you should just see her for yourself I wouldn't want to take away any of the awe," Twilight said quickly.
"But-" Pinkie started.
"OH! Look the carriage has landed" Twilight said, eager to break the conversation. She nudged Rainbow Dash hard in the side with her elbow, effectively breaking her out of her trance. She began to shake with fear as the familiar song started up, her new life flashing before her eyes.
"This is it, goodbye Ponyville , goodbye guys, I'll miss you" Rainbow thought.
"It'll be ok Dash" Twilight whispered in her ear, having known the runaway princess long enough to be able to gaze into her mind.
"She always did know what I'm thinking," Rainbow thought with amusement, "Thanks Twi, I really hope so, if not well this will be the end for the both of us," Rainbow Dash whispered in return.
"I know" Twilight said fully understanding consequences of what they had done if Princess Celestia found out that she knew where her daughter was and didn't report it she'd be banished for treason at best, imprisoned for life bringing eternal shame on her family at worst. Still, she wouldn't change a thing. She had helped her friend when she needed it and that was worth more than any reward for bringing her home...
It was part of the reason why she and Rainbow were such good friends when her parents use to came to the palace for noble functions they'd bring her and shining armor and she use to go explore the castle by herself since shining armor had to stay since he was the "heir" of the family , one time while she while was wondering the gardens she saw another filly flying around in the process of pulling a prank on one the of the guards, she was holding up a water balloon that seemed to be full of neon pink paint when she was right above the unsuspecting guard's head she release her ammo and it splatted all over him making for a hilarious sight She had never laughed so hard in her life but she was pulled out of the moment by a shout when she looked up she saw the filly fly by her , and look back at her yelling "RUN!" and when she saw the guard charging in her direction she did both of them ran or flied in ones case around the garden eventually losing the angry
guard they sat on the ground laughing their flanks off.
"Ha, that was great!"" the mysterious filly laughed
"It was pretty funny, but should you be pranking the guards what would the Princess say?" twilight said, a little worried for the other's safety.
"Ah, don't worry I do it all the time, it'll be fine. The name's Rainbow Dash, what's yours?" the newly named filly asked.
"Rainbow Dash where have I heard that name before" Twilight thought when it suddenly hit her Rainbow dash was the name of the young princess.
She gulped "My name is Twilight Sparkle your highness" She said bowing lowly.
"Hey-Hey none of that I hate being bowed to" Rainbow Dash said making a face "just call me Rainbow Dash none of that princess stuff"
"Of course Prin-Rainbow Dash" Twilight said as she got to her feet, sneaking in a good look at the princess. She a cyan coat and a rainbow mane that although seemed to be well groomed stuck out in all directions. She was stained with mud and cutie mark less. All in all, she looked like a regular pony not at all the princess she was supposed to be. Shining would have a field day with this.
"Cool... hey want to help me pull some pranks Twilight?" Rainbow Dash asked eagerly. " I could use the help"
"S-s-sure " Twilight stuttered, a bit surprised. She was never invited to do anything with most of the foals her age, let alone a princess!
"Awesome come on lets go "Rainbow Dash said as she lead Twilight towards the palace" We can prank uncle silver I haven't pranked him in two days that way too long can't have him getting too comfortable now can I my reputation will not allow it "
Twilight giggled at what the princess had said this reaffirmed that she was not like other royals.
Rainbow Dash heard her giggle and smiled. She wasn't scared of her like the others were when they found out who she was. She was excited to have a real friend who didn't care about her mom.
"I'm thinking paint, a lot of paint and some feathers, what do you think?" Rainbow asked
"Hmm I know a spell that creates feathers and a levitation charm that could work," Twilight replied, beginning to warm up the idea once she knew no one would get hurt.
"That would be perfect! You're a genius, Twi." Rainbow mused.
"Thanks Dash" Twilight said with a blush no one had ever called her a genius before.
"Come on lets go before mom finishes that boring luncheon" Rainbow said as she flew off.
"Right" Twilight said and smiled. Princess, she had totally forgotten about the princess.
Before twilight had to go Rainbow asked a question that would change both their lives.
"Hey Twi, we're friends right?" She asked nervously she never had a friend before if you didn't count the guards.
"Of course we are" Twilight replied she had never had a friend except for shining armor.
"Good ... hey next time you come meet me in the garden we'll have some more fun " rainbow smiled.
"I will" Twilight replied.
End flashback
After that day, if time allowed, they always met in the gardens and went pranking. A year later Twilight introduced her to Shining Armor, she had to laugh at that when the two of them seemed to be smitten with each other at first glance. In return Rainbow introduced her to Celestia who got her into a gifted magic school.
But now there is a defiant chance she would never experience anything like that again and Rainbow Dash would be dragged back to the palace never to see the light of day again forever banned from the friends she made here.
"No that won't happen! No matter how mad Princess Celestia is she wouldn't cut Dash off from her friends," Twilight thought with determination.
Suddenly a royal crier spoke "hear ye hear ye presenting her majesty Princess Celestia"
With that both Rainbow and she snapped out of their thoughts as they along with everyone else looked up to the stage slowly coming out of the carriage was a beautifully regal pure white alicorn with a multi colored mane and a cutie mark of a shining sun.
But there was something different about her that Rainbow Dash immediately noticed there were dark rings under her eyes and her eyes themselves were tinted red as if she'd been crying recently her main was not as well groomed as it usually was not that other ponies noticed there were some things a daughter just knew.
"I did this "Rainbow thought out loud.
"Did what darling? Asked rarity confused.
"Nothing forgive me just talking to myself" Rainbow Replied as she realized she had been heard.
Rarity nodded and went back to watching the princess in awe.
"Great not only am I a horrible princess I'm a terrible daughter as well" Rainbow thought sadly as she looked up at her mother.
"What's wrong Dash" Twilight asked concerned when she saw the sad look in her eyes.
"Nothing I just have to get out of here" Rainbow said as she used the fact that her friends and everypony else were too focused her mother speech to notice her sneaking off.
She was almost to the back to the crowd when like a tidal wave ponies started running towards the front to the princess unfortunately taking her with them.
"that's it somepony up there hates me" Rainbow Dash thought as she was pushed though the crowed easily fitting through cracks and between ponies she struggled as she never struggled before as she saw the rapidly approaching front. "oh no!" she thought as she was suddenly rocketed crowed out of the stage ... right in front of her mother hooves.
After shaking her head to relieve some of the dizziness from her landing she looked up her eyes locking with another pair.
"R-RAINBOW DASH!" Her mother yelled in a mixture of joy and confusion.
The crowd broke out into whispers when they heard that.
"Rainbow Dash?"
"Like the princess?"
"But that's Bright, isn't it?"
"Bright is a princess?"
"What does she mean Rainbow Dash that's just Bright. There must be some kinda mistake?" Applejack asked.
"I don't know darling I'm as confused as you are but maybe, I think Bright is the princess," Rarity said confused, unable to match the filly who burped and scratched in public with the picture of regality she had always imagined.
"But how can be Bright be a princess, she would have told us if she was. Wouldn't she?" Pinkie said in a rare serious moment.
"But why did she crash in my backyard and not go home when she was better?" questioned Fluttershy. "Why would a princess want to live in Ponyville?
"And why call her Bright?" Pinkie added.
Suddenly it hit them there was one among them that knew the answers.
"Twilight, dear, would you care to explain?" asked Rarity in a tone that said she wouldn't take no for an answer.
Twilight who up until then was doing her best to seem small and unnoticeable sighed and began to explain.
"Long story short, here is what happened; it was at the last ball Dash and her Mom had a fight apparently Princess Celestia wanted her act more princess like and well you can guess Rainbow slash Bright didn't like that but what was the last straw was the Princess, Celestia, not Bright aka Rainbow Dash, was arranging a marriage for her, she got so mad she ran away but got hurt I don't know doing what that when she landed in your back yard, Fluttershy, didn't want you to treat her different so she went by Bright instead of her real name. When she figured out how nice it was here she didn't want to go back so she decided to stay here as long as possible, I of course knew who she was but not that she was here so when I came to Ponyville, which was a coincidence she made me promise not to say anything so I didn't. That whys she's been trying to leave she didn't want her mom to find her," Twilight explained in one breath.
It took a moment for everything to sink in.
"So she really is the princess" Rarity breathed out.
"Well who would have thought it, we were friends with royalty," Applejack said not quite believing it.
"Are friends," Fluttershy said strongly. "We are friends with her."
"Yeah!" Pinkie said and jumped up. "Friends forever, remember?"
Twilight smiled. "Come on guy, Dash might need us." They began to walk towards the princesses.
Princess Celestia couldn't believe her eyes. Here in front of her was her missing daughter who she had been searching for weeks, happy and whole. She felt as if a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders.
"Rainbow?" she asked again, not quite daring to believe it.
"Hi mom," The lost princess said.
That voice, those eyes, that maneā¦
With speed she hadn't used in years she scooped up her daughter in a hug and to both their horror, began to cry with relief.
"I'm sorry my little Rainbow, I shouldn't have tried to change you or anything else...I'm so sorry I've missed you so much, so very much," she cried "I was so scared."
"I'm sorry too, Mom, I should have at least let you know I was okay but I was afraid you'd make me leave and I didn't want to go," Rainbow Dash , wiping some of her own tears into her mother's shoulder, not caring if her identity was revealed to the entire town, for all her faults she had missed her mother.
"We both made mistakes but we're together again," Celestia said as she dried Rainbow's eyes.
They were brought out of their moment by a soft, "your highness"
They turned to find Twilight Sparkle bowing as low as she could, her snout nearly touching the wooden floor of the stage.
"You highness, please forgive me for not reporting your daughters whereabouts, I-"
"She's my friend, Mom," Rainbow Dash said fiercely. "Don't punish her."
"Do not worry my little ponies, I will not punish anyone for helping a friend," Celestia chuckled tearfully.
Both of them breathed a sigh of relief.
"Now, Rainbow, why don't you tell me more about Ponyville. After we raise the sun of course, it seems you have much to tell me," Celestia said looking to the others that had come with Twilight.
"Of course, Mom," Rainbow Dash said smiled.
