What Is Best in Life?

by HAZESHIFT

Chapter 1: This Definetly This

This Definitely This

Aunt Luna had once asked Cadence a question that Cadence had never been able to fully answer. “What is best in life?”, five word packed together that for the longest time had puzzled Cadence to no end when she was fully awake and coherent. But now when she was sleeping with her loving husband in their comfy bed with nice warm blankets it was far from the first question on her mind.

The first question on her mind in this state used to be how to keep the warmth of Auntie Celestia’s sun on her while getting rid of the pesky light getting in her eyes and waking her up. The answer she had found was specially made magic curtains, she just wished it hadn’t taken her several years to figure out. All that precious potential sleep time wasted and gone forever. But now Cadence didn’t have to worry about that, she was all snug in warm in her bed with her husband in her own castle in the Crystal Empire.

She floated through the calm serene inky blackness of her own dreamscape. Luna had taught her a little bit about controlling her dreams and Cadence had to admit that it had done wonders. Sure she liked the random and nonsensical adventures that her dreams gave to her but sometimes it was just nice to be lucid and control what was going on. She liked feeling like she was floating in the ocean in the black of night, it was a very calming situation. That was until everything shifted.

In a split second Cadence inky blackness washed away and Cadence realized that she was now pretty much staring at the back of her eyelids. Her dream had been interrupted when something in the waking world had shifted and moved her. The heaviness of her eyelids and the comfort of the warm blankets surrounding her stopped her from opening her eyes and looking around so she settled for a small stretch to feel her surroundings. It took little time for her to figure out what was wrong with her surroundings, Shining wasn’t next to her any more. She let out a little whine, hoping to entice her husband back to the bed to cuddle her. But after a few seconds of nothing happening she began to wonder what Shining was doing. Could he be in the bathroom, could he have gotten out of the room quietly enough for her not to hear, would he mind if she now to most of the blankets to make herself more comfortable? Deciding not to think too much on that last point Cadence stretched out and slowly pulled the blankets closer to her and snuggled into their warmth.

Minutes ticked by as Cadence laid in her bed, slowly falling back to sleep until her ears perked at the sound of the door to the bedroom opening. Eyes closed still she figured it must be Shining finally coming back to join her, though he was going to have to fight her for blanket space. She could tell he was purposefully trying to be quiet by how soft the sounds his hooves were making. He was either trying to surprise her or not wake her. The sound of his hoof falls kept coming closer and closer till she could tell that he got to the edge of the bed. She waited for the tell tale sound of him climbing back up into the bed but it never came. Instead she what she heard was the sound of something small being set on the bed. She assumed it wasn’t that heavy, from the soft sounding thud it made but she couldn't exactly tell what it was. She noticed that Shinging had now turned and headed back to the doors and exited once again. Cadence guessed that he was getting multiple things to do something for her. That thought somewhat dissipated when whatever Shining had placed on the edge of the bed began to move. CAdence smile grew a bit when she began to recognize what was moving towards her on the bed. The of so soft and unsteady hoof falls which made when they pressed into the mattress made even softer creaks. A small hoof prodded one of her back legs with curiosity before the something climbed over it and continued upwards towards her head. Cadence felt the something lean against her barrel for a little before making the last leg of its journey to stop and began nuzzling one of her forelegs. With a smile on her muzzle Cadence finally opened her eyes a little and came face to face with the small bed explorer

“Why good morning to you too Flurry Heart,” The baby filly stopped nuzzling for a moment to look into her mother’s eyes and gurgled happily. Cadence Shifted her forelegs allowing FLurry to get in between them before CAdence pulled her closer and gave Flurry her own affectionate nuzzle to which Flurry cooed in response. Cadence chuckled at her daughter’s energy and responses, loving every second of it as she cuddled her little Alicorn fluffball. “Did you come to spend some comfy time in bed with mommy?” Cadence asked the drowsiness wearing away and making her eyelids less heavy so she could keep them open. Flurry’s response was to make some kind of sounds before burying her face in her mother’s neck, an action which Cadence took to mean “Yes,”. Cadence let the comfy confines of her blanket fall a little as she rolled onto her back and placed Flurry onto her stomach where she finally noticed something was out of the ordinary. Flurry was in her normal diaper but there was a note pinned to it, Cadence assumed that her drowsiness prevented her from realizing it was there. While playing with Flurry with one hoof she used the other to remove the note. She unfolded it and read it before letting out a chuckle. She moved the note down out of her vision to look at Flurry Heart who was softly patting her mother’s stomach and having a blast. She chuckled looking at both things in her view, the note read ‘I’m a distraction!” with a little heart beneath it with Flurry’s initials inside.

“Oh you sure are a distraction. Mommy’s cute and cuddly widdle distraction,” Cadence said dropping the note and picking Flurry up so she could give her a small kiss right next to her horn before tucking her close to her chest. Even with the giggling, cooing, gurgling, and other noises Cadence felt like she could stay like this for the rest of the day.

“Yep she’s the best distraction a husband could ask for,” Cadence ears perked and Shining came back through the bedroom doors, this time with a cart full of food. The pleasant smells of freshly cooked breakfast filled the room and Cadence could literally feel Flurry hum with delight. Shining parked the cart next to the bed before he leaned in far enough to nuzzle Flurry and then turned his attention to Cadence. “Happy Mother’s Day, honey,” he said before their lips met in a quick kiss.

“Aw thank you sweetie,” she said when they pulled away from each other.

“It’s nothing Cadence, i just wanted to do something special for you today. Flurry is just my perfect little helper,” he smiled down at Flurry who was looking up at him with a large adorable stare. Truth be told Cadence had not remembered it was Mother’s Day when she woke up, maybe Shining deliberately used Flurry to that effect so that she wouldn’t think about it till he told her. Cadence gave her husband credit for what may be a smart move. Besides it’s was a tradition for me and Twilight to do stuff like this for mom years back before we all started to split up. And now that we got our own little bundle I don’t think it’s too early to start the tradition back up,”

“But isn’t going to your mother’s a bit of a long trip?” Cadence joked, playing with Shining’s words. To which he only grinned back at her. Shining turned back to the cart and reached under a small tray and pulled out a picture and showed it to her. Cadence looked at the picture for a bout to second before she started laughing which accidently made Flurry tumble of her stomach onto the bed. In the picture was Shining’s mother, Twilight Velvet, she laid in bed in her home in canterlot and flanking her on both sides were Twilight and Spike who looked like they had snuck in and were now sleeping peacefully while Velvet smiled down at them. She guess the Shining’s dad, Night Light, was taking the picture. “Oh that is just too cute. I’m going to have to make copies of this,” She said as she started laughing before Shining joined in. And they kept laughing till a certain sound coming from the cart of food piqued their interest.

“Om nom nom nom om nom nom,” both looked to see that Flurry HEart was busy nomming on some kind of pastry, the tell tale brown stain of chocolate was around her mouth. Apparently when she tumbled off her mother FLurry had decided to explore a little more and made her way to the food cart and began trying to eat the first thing she could get her little hooves on. The sight of their daughter only encouraged Shining And Cadence to laugh more as Cadence used her magic to Float Flurry back over to her and give her a hug which Flurry naturally accepted, Cadence didn’t even mind if her coat got dirty. She kept chuckling as Flurry nuzzled into her and smeared chocolate on her. It was about then the Cadence had a realization about the question that Luna had posed to her. Luna had said that once the answer to that question had something to do with crushing enemies and lamentations of mares but Cadence didn’t really know anything about that. But right here and now with her caring husband and messy affectionate foal she felt like her answer was better.

“....This definitely this,” she said to herself as she pulled Flurry up a little to give her a kiss before getting some well deserved breakfast.
